Painted Trim

frozen water lines

This time of year in Ohio is when water lines are most susceptible to freezing.  Frozen water expands and therefore causes the water lines to burst, alowing water to invade your living space and ultimately damaging your home.  Stopping the water intrusion and repairing the damaged water lines is first and foremost, the space then needs to be thoroughly dried.  It may be necessary to remove drywall, trim and flooring in order to completely dry the surfaces.  Moisture left in any substrate will ultimately cause mold growth and therefor create health hazards.  Stiles of Ohio has experience with all damages presesnted by water.  We can repair your complete home, from the flooring to the final paint application.

Wallpaper removal

It seams that wallpaper removal has lately been a popular request for Stiles of Ohio and one thing that is always certain about removing wall coverings is the fact that you never know what you are going to get. There are so many factors involved; the quality of the wallpaper, the type of wallcovering, the way it was installed, the way the wall substrate was prepared and the age of the wallpaper are just some of the things to consider when removing any wallcovering.

Our best strategy has been to wet the wallpaper and keep it wet, knowing this, Stiles of Ohio protects the floors and furniture and keeps towels handy to wipe off doors, cabinets and base trim.  We use standard 4" drywall knives to carefully remove the wallaper from the wall surface and carefull about not damaging the substrate. After the wall covering and glue is removed, another standard proceedure is to apply a coat of oil-base primer to the surface.  This will seal any glue residue that would otherwise have an adverse affect to latex paint. The surface is now ready to fix any repairs and finish.

Removing door in the bathroom

We were challeged with a bathroom renovation project that included removing a door that separated the commode/shower area from the double sink vanity.  The door was confining the area, restricting access to a linen closet and always seemed in the way.  The most cost effective way to alleviate the problem was to simply remove the door, however, the door jam has "cut outs" in them for the hinges and strikeplate. We solved this by filling the holes with stainable wood filler,  stained the filler to match the existing wood trim and went as far as coloring wood grains similar to the existing wood trim. The finish product was pratical and inexpensive.

Older homes with existing plaster require knowledge and advanced skills when it comes to renovations.  Retaining as much of the original plaster as possible to maintain the historical integrity and therefore it is best to use a contractor with experience in dealing with both new (drywall) and old (plaster) substrates.  Stiles of Ohio has been renovating homes since 1995.  Still owned and operated by the founder of the company along side his brother, they offer extensive knowledge and understanding of how to best accomplish any type of renovation or repair.  With the capabilities to provide surface repairs along with final finishes,  Stiles of Ohio accepts the responsibility sets the standard in the industry.

Whitewash exterior brick

Whitewash is an old technique used to protect exterior buildings along the Mediterranean coast.  The process was a simple solution application of a lyme based mixture applied to the exterior masonry to help protect the surface from the harsh winds and salty air found along the coast.  People later used the wash solution to protect exterior wood as well.  Today we use whitewash technique to add a little color and debth to wood or masonry on the interior of our homes.

We were recently asked to whitewash the exterior of a home in Upper Arlington because the homeowner did not like the current color of their brick.  We have found that manufactures do not make a specific exterior whitewash product and therefore anything applied will have to be protected with a masonry clearcoat to maintain the color.  Another option would be to prime and paint the exterior with products designed for masonry surfaces.  This process will change the color of the exterior however it will also add to future maintenance because the surface will discolor over time and there is always a chance that some areas could fail.  It is our advice to leave brick its natural color and paint the trim, add shutters and add plants to change the look of a building.

Columbus, Ohio Chinese Drywall

There has been problems with some newer homes that installed cheap drywall that was manufactured in China.  These homes began to smell like sulfer over time and further inspections revealed that the cause of the oder was the cheap drywall.  Stiles of Ohio, Inc. only installs gypsum that was manufactured in the U.S.A.

This situation is a prime example of "You get what you pay for."  We have learned over the years that using the best materials, the best equipment and the best knowledge of the trade is the only way to get a job done right.  Quality takes time and time is money.  Requesting an honest pay for honest work allows us to produce the highest quality product to our clients.  Our only "call backs"  are from those who whish to work with us again on their next project.
